Venice

"It's the most triumphal city I've ever seen", said Philippe de Commynes in 1495 about Venice, ambassador to the king of France Carlo VIII. At the end of the Medieval period, the Republic of Venice ("Repubblica di Venezia") was one of the five most important states in Italy, undisputed ruler of the Mediterranean and the most admired city in Europe.

The city was founded in 452 by refugees that searched continuously for refuge from the Barbarians between the islands and the lagoon. They recognized quickly that the islands had a solid bottom and thus built the first core of the city in stone, larch and oak. And so was formed "The Beaver Republic", so called by Goethe in his "Trip to Italy".

Today, Venice covers a total surface of 7 km.², subdivided into 118 islands. This relatively reduced surface holds the most precious architectural jewel in the world, a miracle of lightness, divided into 160 canals and united by 418 bridges. A dream city that takes your breath away on every visit.
